There has been a Marian sanctuary on the Mount for several centuries. According to an ancient legend, the valiant Roland de Roncevaux, going on a pilgrimage to Rome, is supposed to have stopped at the sanctuary built by Saint Martin.
The place was destroyed on several occasions. The current church, whose bell tower is visible throughout the region, was completed in 1896. The same year saw the building of the Way of the Cross which stretches along the road as it climbs up the hill.
